Abtract: Carl Zimmer will be hosting a lecture by Zach Seward, Editorial Director of A.I. Initiatives at the New York Times. The newspaper has been developing a lot of innovative methods to use artificial intelligence to investigate vast amounts of data in search of breaking news. Seward will talk about this new field of research, and also address the potential threats that AI poses to journalism as a whole.

Speaker Bio: Zach Seward was a reporter and editor at the Wall Street Journal before co-founding Quartz, which he led for 11 years. In 2023, he joined the New York Times as the editorial director of artificial-intelligence initiatives.

Seward will discuss how journalists can harness AI to do innovative, responsible reporting, highlighting new projects underway at the New York Times. He will also consider the challenges that AI poses to journalism’s long-term survival.
