/j/94323793445\n\n\n\nAnalysis of "Big" Real-World Health Care Data: Promi
ses and Perils\n\n\n\nAbstract: Using administrative patient-care data suc
h as Electronic Health Records and medical/pharmaceutical claims for popul
ation-based scientific research have become increasingly common. With vast
sample sizes leading to very small standard errors\, researchers need to
pay more attention to potential biases in the estimates of association par
ameters of interest\, specifically to systematic biases that do not dimini
sh\, but become more amplified with increasing sample size. Of these multi
ple sources of biases\, in this talk\, we primarily focus on understanding
selection bias. We present an analytical framework for understanding sele
ction bias and arriving at bias-reduced inference using external data from
a target population. We illustrate our methods via case-studies in cancer
and COVID-19. We try to highlight that sampling and study design are at t
he heart of analysis of big data. This is joint work with many of my forme
r students and colleagues at the University of Michigan School of Public H
ealth.\n\n\n\nBio: Professor Bhramar Mukherjee is the Anna M.R. Lauder Pro
fessor of Biostatistics and Professor of Chronic Disease Epidemiology at t
he Yale School of Public Health (YSPH)\, where she serves as the inaugural
Senior Associate Dean of Public Health Data Science and Data Equity. She
also holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Statistics and Dat
a Science and is affiliated with the MacMillan Center and the Institute fo
r the Foundations of Data Science. Prior to joining Yale in 2024\, Dr. Muk
herjee built a distinguished career at the University of Michigan\, where
she held several leadership roles\, including Chair of the Department of B
iostatistics and Associate Director of Quantitative Data Sciences at the R
ogel Cancer Center. She was also involved in the U-M Precision Health init
iative and the Michigan Institute of Data Science (MIDAS).\n\n\n\nDr. Mukh
erjee’s research spans statistical methods for analyzing electronic heal
 th records\, gene-environment interactions\, and data equity\, with applic
ations in cancer\, cardiovascular diseases\, and environmental epidemiolog
 y. She has over 390 publications and has received numerous accolades\, inc
luding election to the National Academy of Medicine in 2022. During the CO
VID-19 pandemic\, her team's work on nowcasting models for India received
global media attention. Dr. Mukherjee is a passionate advocate for global
health equity and is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and
the American Association for the Advancement of Science.\n
