SUMMARY:FDS Colloquium: Dean Eckles (MIT)\, "Policy Relevance of Causal Qua
 ntities in Networks"
DESCRIPTION:\nAbstract: In settings where units' outcomes are affected by o
thers' treatments\, there has been a proliferation of ways to quantify eff
ects of treatments on outcomes. Here we describe how many proposed estiman
ds can be represented as involving one of two ways of averaging over units
and treatment assignments. The more common representation often results i
n quantities that are often irrelevant\, or at least insufficient\, for op
timal choice of policies governing treatment assignment. The other represe
ntation often yields quantities that lack an interpretation as summaries o
f unit-level causal effects\, but that we argue may still be relevant to p
olicy choice. Among various estimands\, the expected average outcome -- or
its contrast between two different policies -- can be represented both wa
ys and\, we argue\, merits further attention. Joint work with Sahil Loomba
.\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Dean Eckles is the William F. Pounds Professor of M
anagement and a Professor of Marketing at MIT Sloan. He is Associate Dire
ctor of the Institute for Data\, Systems &amp\; Society in the Schwarzman
College of Computing.\n\n\n\nHis substantive research examines people's in
teractions with and through communication technologies\, especially the wa
ys these technologies mediate and direct social influence. This work somet
imes requires or benefits from new analytical methods\, so Eckles also wor
ks on applied statistics\, design of field experiments\, and causal infere
nce.\n\n\n\nPrior to joining MIT\, he was a scientist at Facebook and Noki
a.\n\n\n\nEckles received his BA in philosophy\, a BS and MS in cognitive
science\, an MS in statistics\, and a PhD in communication\, all from Stan
 ford University.\n\n\n\n\n
