Yale PhD students gathered at FDS on November 7th in Kline Tower for an initial input session to help shape the new Peter Salovey and Marta Moret Data Science Fellows Program, which will begin accepting applications in Spring 2026.
Professor Bhramar Mukhergee, steering committee co-chair of the Data Science Fellows Program, discussed the fellowship with a roomful of PhD students eager to give feedback.

The program will bring together first- and second-year PhD students from across disciplines to advance data-driven research, develop cross-campus connections, and strengthen Yale’s data science community.
During the session, students shared ideas for coursework, mentorship, community-building, and professional development. Discussion topics included:
- Creating flexible pathways for mentorship, including multiple faculty mentors and peer support.
- Training in reproducibility and ethics.
- Building community through social activities, a journal club, and events designed for Fellows to connect outside of formal academic settings.
- Ensuring equitable access to resources and research/travel support, with funding based on individual need.
- Offering opportunities for outreach and broader impact through mentoring, bootcamps, and programs such as STATCOM and the Big Data Summer Immersion.
The feedback from this session will inform the final structure of the two-year program, which provides mentorship from outstanding Yale faculty, rotations in interdisciplinary “collaboratories,” structured professional development, and additional research support.
