AI Agents for Biomedical Discoveries
|
Speaker: James Zou (Stanford) Associate Professor, Biomedical Data Science Stanford University Tuesday, September 9, 2025 11:00AM - 1:00PM Location: Yale Institute for Foundations of Data Science, Kline Tower 13th Floor, Room 1327, New Haven, CT 06511 and via Webcast: https://yale.zoom.us/meeting/register/z-BYSVs8SfSpnGa7CkyLxQ |
Talk Summary: AI agents are transforming how we do science. In this talk, Dr. James Zou will showcase how intelligent, tool-using language models are accelerating discovery and improving peer review. He’ll introduce Virtual Lab, where AI scientist agents collaborate to solve research problems—like designing nanobody treatments for COVID-19 variants. He’ll also demo CellVoyager, which uncovers insights from complex genomics data, and Review Feedback Agent, used at ICLR 2025 to enhance over 20,000 peer reviews. The tutorial will highlight lessons from building and deploying these systems—and what they mean for the future of research.
Speaker bio: James Zou is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Data Science at Stanford University, with courtesy appointments in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. His research focuses on developing artificial intelligence that is more reliable, human-compatible, and statistically rigorous, with applications to human health and disease. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2014, and has previously been a member of Microsoft Research, a Gates Scholar at Cambridge, and a Simons Fellow at UC Berkeley. Since joining Stanford in 2016, he has also served as a Chan Zuckerberg Investigator and a member of the Stanford AI Lab. His work has been recognized with two Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Investigator Awards, the Sloan Fellowship, the NSF CAREER Award, a Top Ten Clinical Achievement Award, and faculty awards from Google, Adobe, and Amazon.
