Speaker bio: Purnamrita Sarkar is an associate professor of Statistics at the University of Texas at Austin, where she works at the intersection of high-dimensional statistics, optimization, and machine learning theory. She is a co-PI in EnCORE: Institute for Emerging CORE Methods of Data Science and is affiliated with the Institute for Foundations of Machine Learning (IFML). She also holds a courtesy appointment in Computer Science and is affiliated with Operations Research and Industrial Engineering at UT Austin.

Before joining UT Austin, Sarkar was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, where she worked on asymptotic theory for network models and the nonparametric bootstrap for big data. She received her PhD from the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University, where her thesis analyzed the theoretical properties of proximity measures arising from random walks and used them to design fast algorithms. She holds a B.Tech. from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.
