Ella McCoshan is a PhD candidate in the Seto Lab for Urbanization and Global Change at the Yale School of the Environment. Her research explores diverse urbanization processes, particularly those that exist outside top-down ex-ante urban planning i.e. informal organization, settlement and development. She is interested in how these urbanization processes interact with climate adaptation, health and wellbeing, with case study sites across Sub-Saharan Africa. Ella’s work is rooted in geography and complexity science, drawing from her background in Economics (University of Cambridge) and Space Syntax – an urban science approach blending spatial data science, urban planning and sociology (University College London). In consulting, she led demographic and economic forecasts for urban masterplans, and researched links between urbanization and health. She was the 2024 recipient of the Fulbright-Elsevier Data Analytics Award (USUK Fulbright Commission).
