Lynn Cooley is the C.N.H. Long Professor of Genetics and Professor of Cell Biology and of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at Yale University. She serves as Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and Vice Provost for Postdoctoral Affairs. A developmental cell biologist, Professor Cooley’s research investigates the mechanisms that govern germ cell development using Drosophila melanogaster as a model system. Her laboratory is best known for discoveries related to intercellular bridges known as ring canals, which enable cytoplasmic sharing among developing germ cells. Her work has advanced understanding of the cytoskeletal and ubiquitin-mediated pathways that regulate oogenesis and spermatogenesis. Since joining the Yale faculty in 1989, Professor Cooley has been deeply involved in graduate and postdoctoral education. She previously directed Yale’s Combined Program in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences and has been a driving force in strengthening mentorship, community, and professional development for early-career researchers. Professor Cooley is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Pew Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences. She received her B.A. in zoology from Connecticut College and her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, followed by postdoctoral work at the Carnegie Institution for Science.
