Jonathan Elkobi is a PhD student in Political Science at Yale University. His research examines how political institutions, elite behavior, and financial markets interact, with a focus on local governments, public debt, and the political economy of information. Methodologically, he combines causal inference with computational social science, including text-as-data, machine learning, large language models, and large-scale administrative data. His work bridges political economy and data science to study how political signals shape markets, policy decisions, elite behavior, and the distribution of public resources. Jonathan previously earned a Master’s in Chinese Economic and Political Affairs from UC San Diego and a BA in Business Administration and China Studies from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has also been a Visiting Researcher at ETH Zurich and the German Aerospace Center’s Institute of Data Science.

What do you do with Data Science?

I am especially looking forward to being in an interdisciplinary environment where I can learn from peers who approach data science from different fields and perspectives. I hope to pick up new techniques, exchange ideas, and think together about how these tools can help us ask (and answer) better and more meaningful research questions.
