Speaker bio: Cong Ma is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Chicago. His research lies at the intersection of statistics, optimization, and machine learning, with a broad interest in the mathematics of data science. His current work focuses on reinforcement learning, transfer learning, multi-modal learning, high-dimensional statistics, and nonconvex optimization.
Prior to joining the University of Chicago, Ma was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked with Professor Martin Wainwright. He received his Ph.D. in 2020 from Princeton University, advised by Professors Yuxin Chen and Jianqing Fan, and earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2015.
Ma’s work has appeared in leading journals and conferences, including the Journal of the American Statistical Association, NeurIPS, and IEEE Transactions on Information Theory. His research has been recognized with honors such as the 2024 SIAM Activity Group on Imaging Science Best Paper Prize, reflecting his contributions to modern statistical theory and learning algorithms.
