Emily Hau is the Associate Director of the Yale Institute for Foundations of Data Science (FDS), where she leads strategic initiatives, builds cross-disciplinary partnerships, and oversees a diverse portfolio of programming that transforms cutting-edge research into practical impact. With over 15 years at Yale, Emily has played a pivotal role in advancing research collaboration and institutional growth. Prior to her current role, she served as the Director of Programs and Partnerships at the Yale Institute for Network Science (YINS), where she developed and managed high-impact research initiatives. At FDS, Emily has designed and executed fully subscribed conferences and symposia that bridge academia, industry, and government. Her programmatic highlights include a machine learning conference co-sponsored by Google Research and the National Science Foundation, a pioneering sampling conference supported by the NSF, and an upcoming sports analytics symposium with sponsorship from ESPN, the Red Sox, the CT Sun, and the NSF. Beyond her work at Yale, Emily is a dedicated problem-solver in both academia and the community. She co-founded the Give Speech Foundation, a nonprofit committed to making augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) technology more accessible and affordable. Additionally, she leads the Nutmegger Oil Group, a public good initiative that leverages the collective buying power of over 700 households to secure fair pricing and essential services—ensuring no one has to choose between affordability and heating their home. Emily earned her BA in Geography from Ohio Wesleyan University, studied international business law in France, and completed a postgraduate fellowship in developmental social neuroscience at the Yale School of Medicine. She also pursued graduate studies in Fundraising Management at Columbia University, further enriching her expertise in strategic planning and revenue generation. Emily firmly believes that smiles are contagious (and she’s right) and that Yale University is the happiest place on earth—because she helps make it that way.
